Niece To Meet You
September 7, 2010 Posted by: ERIN

Our vacation flew by and we've been back on the island for about a week now, with lots of great memories from our travels. I left San Sal a week earlier than Tom to spend a few days in Rochester where I enjoyed an IMAX movie, diner breakfast, and plenty of quality time with Joba. Once Tom arrived it was up to the cottage where we painted a bedroom, played a bunch of Bananagrams, grilled up lots of tasty dinners, and had sparklers and s'mores around the campfire. Tom also built a beautiful natural stone wall ... the neighbors were highly impressed.

Then it was on to Chicago where we were bad luck for both the city's baseball teams. (Wrigley has a better polish sausage, while the frozen pina coladas and beer selection at The Cell can't be beat.) We also filled our days with going to the dentist, riding public trasportation, celebrating our anniversary at a Brazilian churrascaria, and bowling. And, of course, more grilling. Have you tried grilled pizza yet? Give it a whirl, it's really fantastic.

But perhaps the best thing about our vacation was all of the time we got to spend with our adorable nieces. We had two whole weeks at the cottage with Louisa and Celia, and then in Chicago not only did we finally get to meet little Iris, but spend almost an entire week with her. In no particular order, the gorgeous gals themselves...

Name: Louisa
Age: 3 years
Likes: Blowing bubbles, show tunes, and bread of any sort.
Dislikes: Hangnails and itches.
Special Skills: Using the potty and making funny faces.

Name: Celia
Age: 14 months
Likes: The hammock and Asian hipster haircuts.
Dislikes: Food that is not in her mouth.
Special Skills: Saying "hi!" and climbing the furniture.

Name: Iris
Age: 6 months
Likes: Wooden spoons, international travel, and the Chicago Cubs.
Dislikes: Solid food.
Special Skills: Making the cutest gummy smiles you ever did see.

Things were fine at the field station while we were gone. Zipper hung out with his frenemies and the tropical weather stayed away. Oh, and to anyone who was annoyed when we failed to agree with (and even laughed at) how "hot" and "humid" and "buggy" it was while we were visiting? Please come on down, because right now you'd get an idea of what those words actually mean. I'd be smug if I weren't so sweaty.
